A visual inspection is the most important initial step in identifying a mold contaminated problem. The simplest approach to mold identification is if you can see or smell mold, you have a problem. Mold begins to grow microscopically. It is present in almost any home, school and commercial building. It grows vigorously when there is flooding, water leaks and high humidity and any type of moisture or oxygen. Indoor moisture, which causes mold, can be found in various places such as a damp or flooded basement, water infiltration due to broken or leaking pipes or sewer back-ups and leaking roofs. It can also be caused from improper ventilation systems in kitchens, bathrooms and attics. Any air tight ventilation systems trap mold indoors and spread it through their ventilation systems. Mold reproduces through spores which are very easily spread through the air. Spores reproduce quickly, often multiplying by millions in a few days. If you are unsure what to do with expensive, mold contaminated items, you should consult a Top-Notch Abatement specialist.
Mold can cause many allergic reactions. Allergies result from inhaling mold spores. Even a small amount of mold spores can make a person sick. Although there are hundreds of thousands of types of mold, the most dangerous type is Stachybotrys. Stachybotrys, also called "toxic mold" are believed responsible for respiratory illness. Some types of mold produce "mycotoxins" which means poisons produced by mold. Mycotoxins cling to mold spores and attack cells they come in contact with. Even dead spores that can no longer be activated contains mycotoxins and can still work if they come in contact with other living cells. Although they target molds and bacteria, mycotoxins can also harm the cells of higher organisms, including humans. The ones who are at greater risks are pregnant women, infants and people who have compromised immune systems; like existing respiratory problems.
Physical symptoms related to mold exposure include:
- Runny Nose
- Eye Irritations
- Aggravation of Asthma
Exposures to some molds may even cause lung diseases. Those are called Dust Toxic Syndrome (DTS), and Hypersensitive Phneumonitis (HP). HP will make you feel like you have acquired flu-like symptoms. DTS can occur after a single heavy exposure, although HP requires repeated exposures to the allergen. Such allergens can result in permanent lung damage.
TNA has state of the art equipment for testing air moisture content. Also to tell moisture content on visual surfaces & between wall cavities. TNA will never use fungicides developed for outdoor mold remediation or for any other indoor situation.
Like always, TNA will come to you with a free estimate. Top-Notch's trained staff will work with you by explaining how mold generated in your building. Top-Notch will also establish a personalized course of action to remediate the mold and keep it from recurring.
